Q: What is the greatest environmental threat facing our world today? Examples: Human-induced climate change, biodiversity loss, loss of habitat, air pollution, scarcity of clean water, desertification, deforestation , loss of ocean fish species, overpopulation, poverty.
A:
" Our greatest environmental threat lies not outside in a category, but in the very way we view ourselves. We have become so detached from nature that we do not view ourselves as a part of our environment. Because of this detachment, we have no value in protecting 'the' environment because in our minds it is not 'ours' to worry about it. It is something external, something humans operate outside of.
Our very society has become self destructive. We seek things out that do us harm: drinking, smoking, bad food, & violence. This is being echoed in our environment. The individual does not do what is best for themselves, and we do not do what is best for the environment.
To get society to change, we must first learn how to truly value and love ourselves, and shift this consciousness. We must teach and practice compassion & empathy, and that we are a part of nature, not masters over it. In doing so, we will value each other and the world we live in, & make the changes needed to heal the planet."
